The
following is a list of our previous introductions. The list includes both
tetraploids and diploids. To the average gardener that is an insignificant
difference. But it does matter to many people. You will do well to note that the
tetraploids are marked with an asterisk (*) before the name. The dipoids are
not.
ASHWOOD
BLOOM WITH A VIEW (Robarts - Norris intro) (seedling 13-22) (Last Midnight
X SUBSTANTIAL EVIDENCE) 5 1/4" SEV M 39" Unique in the truest sense of
the word, BLOOM WITH A VIEW is immediately recognizable. In the garden the green
in throat area reads as spots in a way that I have never seen before, anywhere.
(Larry Grace liked this one so well and was so fascinated by the unique look
that he took it home for conversion.) One of my prime criteria for introductions
is the idea that a new plant should have a characteristic that sets it apart
from previously available daylilies. BLOOM WITH A VIEW meets and exceeds that
criteria. This one has consistently charmed visitors here and we promise that
you will fall in love with the look. I was unable to pass the line-out row the
last several years without stopping to admire this one. Distinction is so
important in daylilies and that is what this intro has in the extreme.4 branches
with 28 buds. The fact that BWAV is fertile both ways makes it an intriguing
candidate for use in hybridization. I

ASHWOOD
FIREBOLT (seedling 15-32) 8" SEV 38" M (EVIDENCE OF ALIENS x seedling)
The height, size and striking green throat make this a prominent presence in the
garden. We feel this is a significant step in the pursuit of the hibiscus form
in the program. We registered this as an 8 inch flower but that was from a late
blooming flower on the scape. The earlier blooms will be larger. A tiny bump in
the size and a straightening out of the segments will get us very close to the
desired form we want which will evoke the magnificence of the larger hibiscus
blooms. The blossoms show a rich glow of red with a touch of orange. The
entirety of the blossom with the contrasting green throat is very satisfying.
Buds amount to around 18 on three branches. Fertile

*ASHWOOD'S PLUM
CRAZY (seedling T09-24) 6
1/4" M 28" DOR RE (JERRY HYATT X seedling 03-53) A very special
flower, ASHWOOD'S PLUM CRAZY, illustrates the breeding power of Curt Hansen's
fine JERRY HYATT. This introduction never fails to draw the attention of
visitors here. The look is a little different from most of our introductions at
Ashwood but we would be plum crazy to not introduce this charmer. A bud count of
19 with good rebloom satisfies. The petals are rich smoky rose purple with a
light lavender purple watermark outlined in a darker border. The sepals are an
even richer shade of rose purple making this the elusive reverse bitone. The way
the sepals twist puts this introduction into a whole new category for us. Just
pure fun! Fertile.

*BLUSHING
ESCAPADE (seedling T09-32) 5 ˝” SEV 43” M RE (REPEATED DISCOVERY X
seedling T04-40) It’s about the color. It is a very rich, fairly glowing rose
pink that grabs your attention from a distance much in the way that CORAL
MAJORITY grabs it. A visiting hybridizer stated that she would put it right
along side that iconic introduction. With 22 buds and rebloom, a long season of
beauty is assured. A white edge just adds to the overall impact. With REPEATED
DISCOVERY and therefore BELLE OF ASHWOOD in the background, you know the plant
quality will please you. Fertile both ways.

*BORDERS
ON BORDEAUX (seedling T05-36) 5 1/2" EM 44" DOR RE (PEARL HARBOR X
TUPAC AMARU) A bud count of 32 on plants that were growing on mediocre soil
makes BORDERS ON BORDEAUX a fine choice for the gardener who wants an excellent
plant. For the hybridizer, this is one of our best offers to date. We have a
number of babies for this one awaiting introduction. The watermarks are greatly
enhanced in many of the babies and the fine plant habit is readily passed along.
The petal color is a delightful shade of rose purple and the very whitish
watermark enhances the overall elegant look. There is a bubbled white gold edge
with a hint of blue that gives an added dimension of distinction to the
enchanting blossom. Fertile both ways.

BRYAN'S
SONG (Robarts/Norris) (seedling 12-14) 7" DOR 43" M (ONLY IN
DREAMS X IDA MAE NORRIS) Three visiting hybridizers zeroed in on this one in the
seedling patches. Mike Derrow and Dan Robarts (though not realizing it was his
work) raved and "suggested" that I needed to pay real attention to it.
In 2013 Bryan Culver of Ontario saw it lined out and offered $500 for a single
fan. We have given Bryan the nod, honoring his enthusiasm. The flower is the
clearest of lavender on a excellent scape with 4-5 branches and 27 buds. It is
fertile both ways, giving exciting kids. Foliage is deep green and exceptionally
clean all season. While we do not breed for lavenders very much, the little we
have done in this direction reveals the likelihood this intro will be of great
value to ones who are seeking progress in this color range. The beautiful
lavender contrasting with the green of the rather large throat creates a
striking presence.

*BUTTERMILK PIE (seedling
T09-99) 8" SEV 27" EM RE (seedling T05-23 x BUTTERCREAM) One of my
main goals in breeding has been to produce tetraploids with the flattest throat
areas that I am able. Whatley's iconic BUTTERCREAM has been one of the few tets
that meet this description up to now, This exciting introduction out of it takes
the look another step in that direction. It also increases the size and adds
good rebloom to the picture. BUTTERMILK PIE is flat from the very heart of the
throat while showing more ruffling and depth of color. Dancing stamens are just
a little side benefit that make this a great addition to the field. We have seen
three rounds of bloom from this one. Fertile DOUBLE

*CALL OFF THE SEARCH
(sdlg T09-100 5” DOR 29” EM RE
(MARY’S BABY seedling x seedling) Very striking bicolor, so eye catching that
we had to introduce it despite the fact that we do not purposefully breed for
bicolors. The deep red petals are a startling contrast to the sepals which are
pink with a hint of reddishness. This has been one of the most commented upon
seedlings in the garden and even more so when we give club presentations. The
three branches and 21 buds plus rebloom all work together to provide a plentiful
bloom season. We have not explored the breeding as this is not our area of
concentration. COTS should be a valuable cultivar for those who are breeding for
bitones and bicolors. CALL OFF THE SEARCH is vigorous and fertile both ways.

CONTRARY
CANARY ( seedling14-2)
7 1/2" DOR 34" E RE (HEAVENLY GHOST RIDER X ASHWOOD WRAY OF SUNSHINE) A
seedling that is this far out of my normal range for selection must be special
to reach introduction. It is the vigor of the plant that merited our attention
as much as anything. From being lined out in August of 2014 it started blooming
on well branched and budded scapes two weeks before anything else in the
gardens. Never missing a day, it was still blooming a month after the rest of
the cultivars had shut down. As I have been breeding for decades for long bloom
and rebloom, that is saying something! The canary yellow blossoms sport a
distinctly green cast showing the ASHWOOD WRAY OF SUNSHINE heritage. We counted
buds in the range of 40 on the original scapes and an average of 23 on rebloom.
This is at the same time that the plant is increasing well and showing no signs
of stress. We do not breed for this form so we do not know what should come of
this plant in that regard. However, from 30 years of breeding daylilies I am
confident to say that this intro will likely be a good tool to put many great
plant habits into the unusual form class. We are pricing this one at a bargain
level simply because it is outside of our normal range of concentration.

DANIEL
HOWARD NORRIS seedling 08-2 (KERMIT’S SCREAM X MARTHA EDSON NORRIS)
7” DOR 26 M DANIEL HOWARD NORRIS is what I had in mind when I made the first
crosses of LIGHT OF DETROIT and WHEN I DREAM back in 1993. It only took 15 years
to get what I wanted! When a hybridizer names a flower after a beloved family
member, you know it is special. This beauty is named after my brother, professor
emeritus of Botany at U. C. Berkeley. The 7 inch deep red blooms are in
startling contract to the very large and very bright yellow green throat. The
extreme contrast makes a statement in the garden like few other cultivars.

*ENDURING
CHARM (seedling T15-4) 4 3/4" DOR EM RE (seedling x seedling) This is a
cultivar that falls into the category of that the seedling that screams
introduction from the very first bloom. This was our reaction to such standouts
as BELLE OF ASHWOOD, MARY'S BABY, SUBSTANTIAL EVIDENCE and a few others. That
reaction occurred before we even witnessed the instant rebloom of Enduring
Charm. That instant rebloom can be followed late in the season by regular
rebloom, giving a floral impact of the highest order. There are 32 buds on three
tree-like branches on the initial bloom. The instant rebloom is similarly
productive even if slightly less generous with the bud counts. Our initial
reaction to the blossom was based however on the glow of fine china we see on
the petals, a quality that is not visible in the photographic image. For years
we have specialized in the eyed/edged style of blossom, raising tens of
thousands and we have never seen such a rich glow of fine china that we see in
this one. The seedlings involved in the background of Enduring Charm are both
down from CLARIFICATION and as such are likely to show ever richer and clearer
tones in the babies. This one is fertile but we are not actively pursuing much
in the eyed/edged genre at this time so this intro offers an opportunity for
someone breeding in that area to create some spectacular looks with a unique
glow from the petals and sepals. DOUBLE

*EVERMORE
GREATFUL (seedling T11-38) 6 ˝” SEV 28” (WORTH IT ALL X RED HAT
DIVA) A very large and very intense pure red with a large green throat and a
fine white edge. With 18-20 buds there is nice long season of bloom. EVERMORE
GREATFUL makes a wonderful prelude to the anxiously awaited sib, GREATFUL RED.
It is a bit smaller but has much the same garden impact. This is your chance to
get the genetics of this line at a bargain price. Pods are difficult but the
pollen is good. The second and third images are of clump images of EVERMORE
GREATFUL in its glory. We are coming to the conclusion that this one may be the
better introduction between it and its sib GREATFUL RED.

EVIDENCE
OF ROYALTY (seedling 02-3) 7” SEV 34” EM (seedling x SUBSTANTIAL
EVIDENCE) This is the one that other hybridizers have lusted after for years
now. It is a large at 7” with a giant yellow green throat. The color is a rich
burgundy purple with extraordinary presence. The babies are amazing. All the
plants have been subjected to the conversion process and show some tet pollen
under the microscope. However they are easy to use as diploids and are simply
fantastic breeders as such. It is possible to get tet babies from EOR but not so
much that I have felt comfortable introducing it as a tet. If you can get some
tet babies from it, you can just treat the results as a bonus. In the meantime
using EVIDENCE OF ROYALTY as a dip will make you very happy. There is nothing
else like it anywhere. Pods are difficult but possible, pollen is easy.

mix of this very popular type. The height is a needed characteristic in the
genre. The basic color is a very rich and pleasing red purple with an abundance

satisfying appearance in the garden. The foliage is exceptionally clean and a
rich green which maintains its freshness throughout the season and well into the
fall. Fertile both ways
